LISTEN: Mentor recalls Lundi Tyamara's fighting spirit

Founder of Zuzmuzi Music, Tshepo Nzimande, says he met Lundi Tyamara when he came to Johannesburg to sing with Rebecca Malope in 1995.

Nzimande says he recorded Tyamara's first album soon after discovering his talent.

He recalls that Malope and late Vuyo Mokoena were the popular gospel singers at the time.

We started the album, it was on Wednesday. The following week on Wednesday, we finished it.

The track Umphefumulo wam, which became one of the greatest hits, even now it won the old time classic on the gospel awards.

I received a call from marketing that we have reached 30 000 thousand copies at that time, that was gold.

Nzimande says he will remember Tyamara for his moves on stage and someone who did not give up.

I will remember Lundi as one of the toughest gospel artists I have ever seen.

He went through a lot in his time, in such a way that there was a time where I thought he would give up.

He got ill in 2005. The liver problem has been there for a very long time. He came back. He kept on pushing.

This is one artist, every time he got his royalties, it would go to his mother's account.

Tyamara died aged 38 this morning after battling with abdominal Tuberculosis (TB) and a liver condition.
