Trump's Muslim ban could spark Islamophobic and xenophobic attacks - cleric

Muslim Council of Theologians secretary general, Moulana Ebrahim Bam, says US President Trump's decision to ban 7 Muslim-majority countries from entering US could lead to Islamophobic and xenophobic tendencies.

Trump signed a controversial executive order that blocks immigrants for a period of 90 days.

Bam says there are more terrorist actions carried out by non-Muslim people in America.

He says America has been part of the problems in troubled Muslim-majority countries.

How do people live in a country where you have people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, religious affiliations... How do you expect social cohesion to remain with that type of legislation and orders?

Moulana Ebrahim Bam, Muslim Council of Theologians secretary general

US foreign policy expert, Brookes Spector, says this has caused a divide between Trump and the main body of the Republican party as many of his party members feel he has put them in an awkward position.

Spector says there was also no coordination and discussion with the state and defense department before the announcement.
