City of Joburg brings City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup back in Council fold

City of Johannesburg has decided to integrate City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup back into the City Council.

Spokesperson, Tony Taverna-Turison, says this part of speeding service delivery and fast tracking it.

He insists workers employed by these municipal entities will not lose their jobs.

Workers will become direct employees of the City. He says this should help alleviate complaints workers have had in the past with these corporations.

We are looking at the process of about 18 months. Obviously we want to ensure we do everything by the book.

Tony Taverna-Turison, City of Joburg spokesperson

We want to look at the best model of management and public consultation and relevant unions to understand why we are doing this and have the necessary support.

Tony Taverna-Turison, City of Joburg spokesperson

He says the board members of these corporations earn astronomically high salaries and this money will now be better used channelled into improved service delivery.

This reintegration process has been done in most other Metros like Cape Town and eThekwini and has been very successful, he added.
