OPINION: Efficiency could save "industry blood bath" in poultry sector

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe called on government on Monday to buy and invest in struggling but productive poultry farms that are caving under the pressure of cheaper imports flooding the country.

The industry has been hard hit and has taken to cutting jobs as a means to survive. Xolani said 1 300 jobs could be lost by the end of the month and Rainbow Chickens looks set to retrench over 3 000 workers. However, he doesn't believe government's solution will work...

This is the biggest industry bloodbath.

Xolani compared SA's poultry sector with that of Brazil, describing the latter as "agile".

The industry needs reform, and this is not found in our State Owned Entities (SOE's)... this plan is not going to work.
