ANC nomination process still flawed - Aubrey Matshiqi

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe announced yesterday that provincial ANC leaders will no longer be able to control the process of nominating candidates to lead the party. Nominations will now be sent directly from branches to Luthuli House.

Mantashe said it was too stop the process of building slates or groups of people who run for leadership positions together.

Political analyst Aubrey Matshiqi joins Stephen Grootes on the line to tease out this new directive.

Is the ANC on the right track?

I do think it is a step in the right direction, but for this year's national conference I think it will have limited success.

Aubrey Matshiqi, political analyst

Matshiqi says the ANC should treat it as a pilot project this year and learn lessons from it for the future.

But if they think they will completely eliminate nefarious activities around the nomination process, that will never happen. What will be achieved is to reduce the level of manipulation.

Aubrey Matshiqi, political analyst

He says the first constraint on this new directive's success is the state of the organisation.

The second constraint is the leadership itself. He says the ANC leadership does not have the moral authority "to impose itself on the ANC membership and ANC processes," because he believes many see the current leadership as part of the problem rather than the solution.

Is the ANC intervening in time for the 201p elections, asks Matshiqi? Or is it too little too late?
