Drug abuse escalates at Lenasia school, teachers fear for their safety

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, says he has summoned circuit leadership to intervene in the drug scourge at MH Joosub Technical Secondary School in Lenasia.

A concerned teacher phoned Xolani Gwala saying they are now scared to teach because learners are abusing drugs.

Lesufi admits that the drug problem is escalating at schools, and the department expelled 17 learners found with different drugs.

He says they have tried to send learners affected to rehab and different schools, but that has not yielded results.

Lesufi says the Education Department is now working with the MEC of Community Safety to build an intelligence-driven programme to work with communities.

The people who are harming these children are in our communities.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

This thing of targeting kids in the classroom is not going to assist us. We know some of the areas.
