Water-waster receives police warning #WaterWatch

Despite dam levels of 29%, red alert 3B water restrictions in place and crisis levels looming, many Capetonians continue to waste water.

Kieno Kammies tackled a Bloubergstrand guest owner about his water wastage when he saw him hosing down the walls and windows of his establishment on Tuesday. Jerry Finley, who owns the Pinacle Guest House, told Kammies that despite breaking the ban on using hosepipes, he is water-wise, takes steps to save water, including collecting rain water and asking his guests to shower together. Finley said the water he used to hose down his establishment was full of chemicals and not drinkable.

Police were notified about the water-wastage at the guest house and took swift action, explaining that even though his windows needed cleaning, hosing them down with a hosepipe in these conditions was not acceptable.

The police gave me a warning. They were very professional. I was clearly in the wrong and I take that responsibility.

Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, says more needs to be done to educate those in the tourism industry and has offered to help Finley to find a solution to his problem of window-cleaning in times of drought.
