DA's Shadow Health MEC in Gauteng Jack Bloom says Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu should have resigned sooner for her negligence.
This is in the wake of a damning report by the Health Ombudsman about her department’s handling of the deaths of 94 psychiatric patients in the province.
When Mahlangu publicly announced 36 deaths of psychiatric patients from Life Healthcare Esidimeni Hospital in September, in fact, 77 patients had already died.
The Health Ombudsman revealed on Wednesday that 27 NGOs who received patients transferred from Esidimeni were operating unlawfully.
He says he is shocked by the "cover up" and says the MEC should have resigned in September, adding that Gauteng Premier David Makhura was irresponsible not to dismiss her then.
I was shocked at the lying and the cover up.— Jack Bloom, DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC
Bloom says he had warned Mahlangu about the transfer in December 2015 and she went ahead, despite more objections last year.
According it Bloom, the rot and lies within the Gauteng Health department could have been addressed earlier.
Lives could have been saved if action had been take earlier.— Jack Bloom, DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC
