Qedani Mahlangu lied under oath - Health Ombudsman

Health Ombudsman Professor Malegapuru Makgoba says former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu did not notify Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi and Premier David Makhuru about transferring 1 300 psychiatric patients from Life Esidimeni Hospital to various unlicensed organisations.

Makgoba says when he asked Mahlangu why the Premier and Minister were not told, she said there was no need to notify them because she has coherent competence.

He explained that he interviewed 25 officials from the Department of Health and all of them knew they were doing something wrong.

Makgoba identified the MEC, director general and head of department as three key role players in the saga, and recommended that Makhuru takes action against them.

Even when I asked her [Mahlangu] on the 29th of November, I asked her 'how many people have died MEC?', she said 40 on record under oath.

Makgoba said the criteria for selection and granting licenses to NGOs in question was not something that could be tested.

The head of the department suggested that some of the NGOs did not resist the temptation of making more money.
