Rhodes Has Fallen : But it's #MoreThanAStatue

Photo: The removal of the statue of Cecil John Rhodes from UCT on Thursday, 9 April was a historical event.

Xolelwa Kashe Katiya works with the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection and is an Honourary Research Associate at the University of Cape Town. She shares her reflections of what should happen now that the statue has fallen and explains why students of the #RhodesMustFall Movement are still occupying Azania House.

This is far greater than the statue itself, there's a whole lot of issues that have to be addressed and there are other demands that the students had put forward to the administration. Issues of broader transformation of the University, and issues of the curriculum itself and if you look at the history of this debate at UCT it's very very long . . .

She further explains that the statue symbolizes the issues at hand, and that the context of the debate has centered around the students' protest rather than what those statues symbolize.

Listen to her entire conversation with Africa Melane below:

The students of the #RhodesMustFall movement have refused to move out of the building they have re-named "Azania House", they reiterated their demands in a statement yesterday.
