Zille steps down as head of the DA

In a press conference this afternoon, leader of opposition party the Democractic Alliance, Helen Zille announce her intention to step down from her position as party leader.

Zille says she will not be contesting the party's federal congress elections in May.

She explained that although it was a long time coming, this has been a difficult decision to come to.

This decision has paradoxically been a long time coming, but it was on Thursday that I took a firm decision that I would not be standing for leadership next month.

Zille added that "the overriding reason" for her decision "are the best interests of the Democratic Alliance".
