Heyneke Meyer remembers Joost - He was my captain

Former Springboks and Bulls coach, Heyneke Meyer, says former Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen was a warrior and he had no doubt from his school days that he will emerge as superstar.

Van der Westhuizen died aged 45 after battling motor neuron disease since 2011.

He played 89 times for the Springboks, captaining them at the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

I was a teacher for two years but I wanted to get into rugby. I remember him and I sitting together, him dreaming about being a Springbok and captain and me dreaming about being a coach for Springboks.
