The CEO of the Tax Ombudsman, Eric Mkhawane, says the purpose of this office is to assist the taxpayer if you run into problems with the SA Revenue Service (Sars) and they fail to deal with the issue.
Under the new legislation, Sars is obligated to respond to recommendations made by us. They are given 30 days to do this. If there is a deadlock, we are obliged to report this to Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Finance.— Keith Mkhawane, CEO Tax Ombud
Before Sars takes money from your bank account, they have to write to you first and spell out what will follow and give you options like compromise, deferred payment and consider affordability. If this is not spelt out in this letter of demand, this could be borderline unlawful and unprocedural.— Keith Mkhawane, CEO Tax Ombud
