Somali lawmakers elect new President

Security forces are on high alert as Somali lawmakers gather to elect the new President today.

Suspected Al-Shabab militants have fired two mortar rounds near a hotel where the presidential vote will be held.

Southern Africa Report editor, Crystal Orderson, says this process has been delayed since last August.

The run up is very different from how we would have an election, because it's not ordinary citizens voting for the president but lawmakers due to insecurity.
