ANC: 'Radical economic transformation' second phase of democratic transition

The ANC says it's looking forward to the delivery of the 2017 State of the Nation Address (Sona) which it hopes will tackle 'radical economic transformation'.

In a statement, the ANC outlined land reform and the promotion of black business and small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs) among 12 points they wish to see highlighted in Sona.

The financial crisis in 2008 reversed the gains made for South Africa's economic growth, says ANC economic transformation policy committee head Enoch Godongwana.

Godongwana says the ANC spent the past 20 years working to consolidate democracy and is now changing gears towards economic transformation.

It doesn't mean we haven't done anything in the last 20 years... We are beginning to shift focus in terms of our endeavors.

According to Godongwana, the next phase will be to transform the economy and change the ownership patterns.

He says South Africa's skills shortage is one of many structural constraints hindering the growth of the economy and conceded that the ruling party could have done better to address this.

Godongwana talks about change and continuity, economic growth and the achievement made by the liberation movement.
