Over 70% of South Africans do not experience daily racism - SAIRR survey

Gwen Ngwenya, COO of SAIRR, talks to Stephen Grootes about the survey.

When questioned about whether the survey's question took into account people's understanding of what can often be camouflaged racism, Ngwenya said that racism is a subjective experience.

If that person's experience is not harmed by that particular interaction then it is hard to come in externally and say you have experienced racism whether you think you have or not.

Gwen Ngwenya, COO of SAIRR

We do concede, however, that the survey is slightly biased towards relational racism, which is racism based on your daily interactions - as compared to taking a look at institutional or systemic racism.

Gwen Ngwenya, COO of SAIRR

Nqwenya acknowledges institutional racism is something to be looked at in the next survey.

She says the sample is quite a large sample and gives an optimistic view of the future. Incidents like the one involving Penny Sparrow does not reflect the bigger picture, she adds.
