When questioned about whether the survey's question took into account people's understanding of what can often be camouflaged racism, Ngwenya said that racism is a subjective experience.

We do concede, however, that the survey is slightly biased towards relational racism, which is racism based on your daily interactions - as compared to taking a look at institutional or systemic racism.— Gwen Ngwenya, COO of SAIRR
Nqwenya acknowledges institutional racism is something to be looked at in the next survey.
She says the sample is quite a large sample and gives an optimistic view of the future. Incidents like the one involving Penny Sparrow does not reflect the bigger picture, she adds.
