Barbed wire over Parliament and security stepped up #SONA2017

Parliament has not given a specific reason for a major increase in a number of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers deployed to Parliament as President Jacob Zuma delivers his State of the Nation Address (Sona) tonight.

Law experts and opposition political parties have criticised Zuma's decision to deploy 441 soldiers to maintain 'law and order' when he delivers his Sona speech.

EWN reporter at Parliament, Clement Manyathela, says a number of roads have been closed already, and security measures are being put in place.

Manyathela says Parliament has insisted that soldiers will not be allowed in the National Assembly, but any attempts to disrupt the President address will be dealt with.
