Shares scheme at citrus farm bears fruit for workers

Amid complaints that BEE is not being properly implemented and managed in South Africa, this agricultural Black Economic Empowerment project in the Western Cape has bucked the trend and proved to be a great success!

The Cedar Citrus project based in the Upper Olifants River Valley, near Citrusdal, is a joint venture between 32 farm workers and their employer ALG Estates, with each party owning 50 % of the company.

One of the people behind the project, Gerrit van der Merwe, tells Kieno Kammies more about its success.

We believe we want to stay in South Africa and be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Gerrit van der Merwe, ALG

These workers have worked for long years on these farms.

Gerrit van der Merwe, ALG

We work here with the grassroots - farm workers are not people with high salaries - and that's where the country should spend their money.

He says there are creches on the farm and bursaries for the farm workers children and it gives people dignity and hope.
