How to repair a broken friendship

There's nothing more beautiful than friendship which blossoms over the years.

But friendships are an investment and are hard to mend when they break, explains behavioural psychologist Dr Helgo Schomer.

There are no happy platitudes to ease the pain when a long-term friendship ends.

Dr Helgo Schomer, behavioural psychologist

According to Dr Schomer, there is very little language to help address the 'divorce' between friends as people often underestimate their importance.

Society seldom pays homage to the value of friendships in life, he suggests.

Friendships are essential. They define, anchor and lift us.. What holds true is: Friendship = Stand by me.

Dr Helgo Schomer, behavioural psychologist

He advises that is can be difficult to start new friendships, the older one gets, and says it is important to set ego aside and hold onto friends that add value to your life.

Dr Schomer says friendship requires time and effort. It cannot function without being maintained or be revived without making amends.

A friendship needs investment. You nurture it, meet, talk, share, reflect and are constantly in conversation.

Dr Schomer talks about the importance of friendships and how to proceed when at a cross-roads.
