Baggage pilfering is declining - Acsa

Rolene in Tokai had to pay a penalty for her luggage at the airport for being overweight as a result of having her luggage wrapped. She felt ripped off and unfairly treated because she is forced to take such measures due to the pilferage that takes place at airports.

The National Spokesperson of Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), Colin Naidoo, said that "one bag stolen was one too many" and that the company understands the frustration the passengers go through for luggage that is either damaged or stolen at the airport. He also said that, in partnership with their stakeholders, Acsa continues to increase efforts to prevent baggage theft across all its airports. They make use of an international benchmarked system to capture all bags that are lost, pilfered or damaged.

According to Naidoo, the global target of pilfered bags is 4.5 bags per 1000 passengers.

In South Africa: OR Tambo

  • 2009 18.6 bags per 1000 passegers

  • 2013 – 9.8 per 1000 passengers

  • 2014 – 9.81 per 1000 passengers

  • Cape Town International Airport – 1 out 31 bags
  • King Shaka International Airport – 4 bags per 1000 passengers

In 2013 the company invested R20 million in security infrastructure at OR Tambo international airport to create a layered security approach to fight crime in general. They also redesigned the baggage sorting area entrance to accommodate a fully automated baggage rotation system which ensures very little human interference.
