Publisher of book dubbed a racial coloured sterotype speaks out

Paula Marais publisher of Rainbow Nation Navigation: A Practical Guide to South African cultures has sparked a huge reaction on Twitter and other social media platforms, in particular with regard to excerpts about coloured people.

The text is being criticised as promoting offensive racial stereotyping.

Marais says she only wrote a small portion of the book and did not write the chapter under the spotlight.

She added the book is several years old.

The origins of the book concept was to interact more successfully with other culture by having a better knowledge.

She says her family is a multi-racial one the motivation for the book was to make people understand each other better and believes the two pages have been taken out of context.

Marais says this uproar has been a traumatic experience for her and her family.

She says they started the book with such good intentions.

If I could sum myself up in one word it would be kind...I respect other people's cultures, I respect other people's thoughts...it has been so so hard, I have not slept in three days.

The book encompasses many cultures she explains.

Marais acknowledges that she is taking responsibility for the fallout from the book and has apologised.

They have pulled the book from the shelves and it is being amended.

She says her brother - who was the brains behind the book - and herself are reaching out to the coloured community to find out how this large cultural group should be represented.

That's not what we stand for. That's not what we believe in.

They have apologised for any offence caused saying it was never their intention.

She says the book will not be re-released unless the chapter is fixed to the satisfaction of the coloured community.

I'm open, I'm listening, I want to hear what you have to say but be constructive, not destructive.
