Adventurer Braam Malherbe and rowing mate have faced rough seas and close shaves

Social activist and extreme adventurer Braam Malherbe and his partner are adjusting fast to the curve-balls thrown their way while rowing in the Cape to Rio yacht race.

Malherbe had to change his rowing mate Clyde Barendse at the last minute, and is braving the Atlantic waters with Wayne Roberston instead.

The pair began the expedition on February 6 and will voyage across 6 700 kilometers over at least two months, all for a good cause.

Rough seas, strong winds and large ships have been some of the challenges faced on their nautical adventure, Malherbe explains.

We have not had one good day, fortunately the seas are behind us....We had a very close shave with a super tanker 1000 feet long and 250 feet wide. We had to avoid them, it was really scary stuff.

He maintains that his brave race is in aid of a campaign 'Do One Thing', to raise awareness about conservation and climate change.

Meanwhile, Robertson's wife Cindy says she has been coping rather well with support from friends and family as her spouse rows at sea.

Track the adventure on Braam Malherbe's Facebook Page.
