Cosatu: Sugar tax must be a part of a broader health plan

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says government must have a more comprehensive strategy for healthy living, beyond the the plans to introduce a sugar tax.

Cosatu made representations to a joint parliamentary committee on finance and health about the introduction of a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages, reports EWN's Lindsay Dentlinger

The trade union federation advised that government present a broader plan including measures for meat, alcohol and other products.

At the same time, Cosatu made it clear that they are not against a sugar tax, Dentlinger explains.

They say it's important that government takes steps to improve the health of South Africans, deal with obesity and other non-communicable diseases.

Cosatu says it is also seeking greater clarity on the potential industry job losses if the tax were to be implemented.

Coastu also wants to know how Treasury would use the money from the sugar tax to improve the lives of South Africans.
