Expert Ted Blom talks SA's power capacity, costs and renewable energy options

The Department of Energy told Parliament today that South Africa will start commissioning new energy capacity by the year 2022.

Independent energy analyst Ted Blom says the current trajectory makes provisions for the country to have 55 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2022 through the completion of the two coal-fired stations Medupi and Kusile.

He says the current capacity is 46 gigawatts while the country uses 27 gigawatts (far less than 24 gigawatts which was the peak in 2008).

He explains the country’s energy capacity and renewable energy resources such as wind-gas and photovoltaic (PV) energy.
