Motsoaledi takes action against senior officials involved in Esidimeni tragedy

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says disciplinary steps have been initiated against several senior officials in the department over the death of 94 mentally ill patients from Esidemeni Life.

Motsoaledi says his department is on track with implementing the Health Ombudsman recommendations in the Esidimeni report on the tragedy that occurred.

Professor Malegapuru Makgoba made 18 recommendations after he had conducted investigations into the deaths of 94 mentally ill patients who were transferred from the Life Esidimeni facility.

In one of the recommendations, the ombuds supports the ongoing investigations by police.

Motsoaledi says he has appointed experts and professionals in 16 different disciplines to do assessments on 27 NGO's. About 6 facilities have been closed down since the assessment started.

He says they are in the process of closing 22 more facilities once they have communicated with the owners.
