More categories of crime go under-reported - analyst

Some categories of household crime are increasingly under-reported, according to the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).

This comes after Statistician-General of South Africa Dr Pali Lehohla released the findings of the Victims of Crime Survey (VOCS).

The survey provides information on crime trends and households perceptions about safety and law enforcement.

ISS's Crime Hub manager Lizette Lancaster says the household survey does not accurately represent crimes such as sexual offenses and assaults.

Sexual offenses and assaults are notoriously prevalent among family members and intimate partners. This survey takes place in the household so we shouldn't read too much into the [statistics of] those crime categories.

We are seeing some categories of crime being more and more under-reported.

Many people do not bother to report certain crimes such as assault, crop and livestock theft as crime becomes increasingly normalised in society, Lancaster advises.

She talks about the prevalence and perceptions of violent crime in South Africa and the cost of safety.
