7 inexcusable reasons why people don't use condoms (when they should)

Valentine's Day marked the start of condom and STI awareness week.

But why is it that in 2017 there is still a perception of condoms being 'unsexy'?, asks clinical sexologist Dr Eve.

She explains that there is still a need to highlight the importance of condom usage and inform people about the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.

Dr. Eve explains more interventions are needed to promote consistent and correct condom usage.

She says the increase of HIV/Aids transmission and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is an indication of the poor usage of condoms.

How we know about condom usage is the looking at increasing numbers of HIV/Aids and STI infections - which just keep going up.

Dr Eve, clinical sexologist

In 2015, 7 million people were recorded living with HIV/Aids, while the same year saw 380 000 new infections.

According to Dr Eve, young people (15-24) are most susceptible to STIs.

These are some of the problematic reasons people don't want to use or accept condoms, says Dr Eve:

  • because they are married
  • because they are monogamous
  • because they are celibate or in a sexless relationship
  • because they are circumcised
  • because they believe condoms break or unsafe
  • because they believe female condoms are displeasing
  • because they're on antiretrovirals (ARVs) or Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)

Dr Eve explains why all these reasons are not justifiable and unpacks the risks of not keeping and using condoms.

She also advises that sexual partners must not conflate the importance of sexual health with trust issues.

Dr Eve talks about the value of communication and takes questions from several callers:
