Brian Molefe's new ANC MP title will raise speculation - Stephen Grootes

Former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has been nominated to fill a vacancy on the North West list of ANC members of Parliament.

Molefe resigned from Eskom last year after he was implicated in the Public Protector's 'State of Capture' report.

EWN's Stephen Grootes says the announcement will cause the market and public to speculate about President Jacob Zuma potentially acting against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Obviously the market's are going to speculate and you and I are going to speculate that this is about a cabinet re-shuffle.

Stephen Grootes, senior EWN reporter

He says the move will likely raise questions about why and how the ANC selects its MPs.

What it means is that Brian Molefe is going to become an MP. But there's obviously a reason why he would become a member of parliament - and it wouldn't be to fill up the back benches.

Stephen Grootes, senior EWN reporter

It was found that Molefe communicated regularly with one of the Gupta brothers amid speculation that Eskom had awarded a Gupta-owned company a coal supply tender unlawfully.

Parliament has acknowledged Molefe's nomination says he will be sworn in on a date that is yet to be confirmed.

Grootes says that the ANC's decision may send the wrong signal to the financial market, just days before Gordhan's Budget Speech.
