At R2 million per km, pumping water from the Orange River over 600 km to Cape Town is prohibitively expensive.

Rashied Khan, WC regional director, National Department of Water Affairs told Kieno Kammies this morning that using water from the Orange River is not possible as it's too expensive to get it here and that river is already fully committed.

Research has been done on other transfer schemes across the Franschoek mountains and of Berg river into the Voelvry Dam.

Khan supports the City of Cape Town's plan to name and shame water guzzlers.

Water users who use too much water must be cut down. On the other hand, we must get more water into the system.

Rashied Khan, WC regional director National Department of Water Affairs
