Government one step closer to legalising medical marijuana

Inkatha freedom party (IFP) Chief Whip, Narend Singh, confirmed on CapeTalk that the MCC's proposed guidelines will be restricted only to using Cannabis products for medicinal purposes.

The IFP, through the late Dr Mario Oriani-Ambrosini, who advocated legalising cannabis, tabled a private member's bill.

The bill, if passed, would allow the use of marijuana for various purposes, including recreational, industrial, religious and for medicinal purposes.

Singh explained that the IFP has since decided that they'll only pursue the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes with the Department of Health and with government.

Research around the world has indicated that many countries are already permitting the use of cannabis products for pain relief. ... Any kind of research would ensure that the type of product would not exacerbate the health condition.

Narend Singh, IFP Chief Whip

There's a misconception that there's going to be a free for all.

It's certainly not a free-for-all. It's a point of departure from the side of government to say OK, let's accept that we need to research the efficacy of these products for pain release and whatever purposes they may have.
