8 physical effects of sweeping your pain under the rug

Holding onto childhood pain is not healthy, says counselling psychologist Jeremy Bayer.

The inability to forgive and let go of resentment towards your parents can have long-term physical, psychological and social repercussions, he explains.

Bayer advises that some of the physical symptoms of distress include:

  • insomnia
  • disruptive eating patterns
  • increased blood pressure
  • headaches and migraines
  • sweaty palms
  • back pains
  • neck tension
  • gastro intestinal problems

The list is exhaustive because of the mind body link. If we don't deal with the anger, it doesn't go anywhere. We have to deal with it.

Jeremy Bayer, counselling psychologist

He says it is important to confront and address with childhood trauma for your own physical health and mental well-being.
