Cocaine weighing 271kg, with an estimated street value of R78 million, was confiscated by Sars officials at the Oliver Tambo International Airport on Saturday.
It marks the biggest ever cocaine bust by Customs officials in South Africa, advises Sars spokesperson Sandile Memela.
It's something that has never happened before. It's quite gigantic.— Sandile Memela, national spokesperson at SA Revenue Services
Memela explains that Sars custom officials were working together with their detector dog unit and found the narcotics, disguised as cosmetics, in a cargo warehouse,
Our officials, working with the dogs, flagged the shipment for inspection. Through tests it was established that it's nothing else but cocaine.— Sandile Memela, national spokesperson at SA Revenue Services
He says the incidents inspires confidence in the skills of Sars custom officials and that they will continue to keep a close eye on drug syndicate trends and South Africa's ports of entry.
