Premier David Makhura must do the honourable thing and step down - DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it is not satisfied with Gauteng Premier David Makhura's handling of the Life Esidimeni tragedy and don't believe that his office wasn't consulted ahead of the move.

Makhura delivered his 2017 State of the Province Address in Randfontein, focusing largely on the deaths of at least 100 mental health patients who died after being moved to unlicensed non-governmental organisations.

DA's Gauteng Provincial Leader John Moody says Makhura has exonerated himself of any responsibility in the incident, despite evidence that his office was informed and warned about the transfer.

David Makhura, who we saw as the slayer of the Goliath challenges faced by Gauteng three years ago, has become Pontius Pilate today.

Makhura urged the public not to politicise the matter, but Moody maintains that without opposition parties, the tragedy would not have been uncovered.

His promise that he will leave no stone unturned to bring the culprits to book - he should include himself in that and he should do the honourable thing and step down.

Moody also responded to Makhura's comments on the Gauteng economy, tourism and job creation.
