Give us space, don't use us for political gains - Life Esidimeni families

Families affected by the Life Esidimeni have said the disaster should not be used for political point-scoring.

More than 100 mental patients died after they were transferred from Life Esidimeni to various unlicensed NGO's in Gauteng.

Representative Christine Nxumalo says some political parties are claiming that they are helping the families without ever consulting them.

Nxumalo says their first priority is to ensure that the recommendations of the Health Ombudsman are implemented, that no more lives are lost and that families can retrieve the bodies of their loved one's.

The families have also asked to be allowed to grieve, adding that they do not want to undergo another commission of inquiry.

We are all for answers. But please remember that we have been through so much.

It's a very long, tedious and emotional process. That is why we are asking - give us the space to finalise this and make sure each family member is taken care of.

Families are pressing criminal charges against former Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and others involved, Nxumalo explains.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier David Makhura has again been asked to step down by the DA for his hand in the Life Esidimeni tragedy.

The opposition party has described it as the worst health disaster in the province since 1994.

They say that the tragedy will be Makhura's legacy and that he will be remembered for not taking swift action, reports EWN's Gia Nicolaides.

DA's Shadow Health MEC in Gauteng Jack Bloom says Makhura should have fired Mahlangu when the initial death toll was 36, Nicolaides adds.

At the same time, Parliament is also debating the tragedy caused by patient transfer.
