Local 100% Agave spirits, La Leona, inspired by Mexico but made in SA

Capetonian Sarah Kennan is the creator of South Africa's home grown version of tequila, La Leona.

La Leona is a local, high quality spirit brand made using 100% Karoo-grown Agave plants, Kennan explains.

La Leona means lioness in Spanish, and it seems the 28-year old is roaring to take over the local tequila market with her pure agave spirit made in the mescal tradition.

I am making 100% agave spirit in the exact same fashion as tequila and mescal are made in Mexico. To my knowledge I'm the only one in the country using the exact method.

Sarah Kennan, Founder of La Leona

She went all the way to Mexico to learn from the very best distillers before creating her own spirits.

I went to the mecca of Tequila. Each distillery has their own unique way of making Tequila. It was inspiring and I was lucky enough to learn from the masters.
