Mashaba: We welcome foreigners, but they must respect our country and laws

Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says he has had to cancel attending the opening ceremony of local clinic in Alexandra because the African National Congress (ANC) in Alexandra threatened to interrupt proceedings.

Some protesters burned City of Johannesburg banners and barricaded roads, saying they want answers from Mashaba on why he cancelled the Jozi@Work programme.

ANC members in the area have accused Mashaba of taking credit for building the clinic saying it was the previous ANC-led administration that did all the work.

Responding to those who says he has sparked xenophobic attacks through his comments about illegal people, Mashaba says the City welcomes foreign nationals.

But says 'the only thing we are saying is that when people come to Johannesburg they must respect immigration laws and our country'.

What we are saying is as a City of Johannesburg we cannot allow a situation where you have so many people undocumented and we are doing anything about it. We have immigration legislation in this country and we expect Minister of Home Affairs to ensure that we respect the Constitution.

Herman Mashaba, City of Joburg Mayor

When you have such high incidents of crime where our people are being robbed, and when you talk to law enforcement agencies you understand challenges they have when they have to monitor crime in a City with so many undocumented people.

Herman Mashaba, City of Joburg Mayor
