Bathabile Dlamini behaving like Motsoeneng in grant mess, says Marianne Thamm

Daily Maverick's Marianne Thamm says Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini is not being held to account in the Sassa saga.

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini appears to have 'gone rogue' in the social grants pay out saga, claims Daily Maverick's Marianne Thamm.

It's a mess. It's very interesting that the minister is behaving like Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Dlamini and her department of have been accused of negligence in the handling of social grant payments.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has told Parliament there's no programme to go live on 1 April with a new system to pay out 17 million grants.

Despite this, Dlamini gave the assurance that social grants will be paid without any glitches, but failed to elaborate.

The minister says she will answer all questions on the matter during a press briefing on Wednesday.

Thamm says Dlamini failed to account to Parliament and has created an alternative version of the reality regarding the contract with Cash Paymasters Systems (CPS), which ends this month.

She explains that Sassa plans to sign a new contract with unconstitutional contractor CPS, under renegotiated terms.

Thamm says 17 million vulnerable people across rural South Africa depend on the grant for survival.

If government is unable to pay these grants, it's a national catastrophe.
