New union federation will be a force to reckon with, says Vavi

Trade unionist Zwelinzima Vavi says the new workers' federation will be launched at the end of March.

Vavi, who is the convener of the new labour federation, says the federation will create a sense of unity which is unparalleled.

He says the new federation has 21 unions (representing 684 000 workers) that have signed up, twice the size of Cosatu when it was firstformed in 1985.

We are going to be a force that will turn the whole labour market upside down.

Zwelinzima Vavi, Trade unionist

He says the federation will revive the fight against the labour brokering system, e-tolls and other battles which he says have been suspended because of the deliberate paralysing of unions.

According to Vavi, without strong and independent trade union movements and active citizenship, South African democracy will continue to be eroded.
