Struggles interracial couples still face

Democratic societies have made progress in terms of interracial, intercultural and same-sex relationships, but some couples still get judged and sometimes rejected by their families and close friends.

The Open Line on the Eusebius McKaiser show took an unexpected turn when caller in an interracial relationship shared how her father has rejected her partner.

My advice to Laura and to her partner would be it will take time. Give dad time to come to terms with himself. If the relationship grows, it's their lives they will have to make a decision about it.

Loyd, caller in Cape Town

Another caller shared her story of relating to her grandmother that her partner had a different religion, culture and race from hers.

There was a moment when I realised my grandmother had no comprehension. My grandmother did not know people can have same-sex relationships. She came from an era where that wasn't even talked about, let alone dating somebody from another faith or inter-race.

Jackie, caller in Kenilworth

Jackie added...

So, how do I connect it to something my grandmother could relate to. The moment I told her that - grandma I'm dating a woman and I love her, I just got connected to her about what it was like for her when she dated my grandpa. The issue of race, culture disappeared.
