DA claim of Manyi’s Eskom sponsored PPF is a bit of a stretch - analyst

Political analyst Tinyiko Maluleke has warned critics to tread lightly on speculation surrounding R840,000 in sponsorships given to the Progressive Professionals Forum (PPF) led by Mzwanele Manyi.

On Tuesday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said it had been told through a written parliamentary question that Eskom and Transnet had sponsored the forum to the tune of R840,000 in exchange for seats and tables at events it hosted.

The party claims that this is proof that former Eskom CEO and new African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament (MP) Brian Molefe had been helping Manyi drive a campaign against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Maluleke says while Manyi is vocal about his discontent with Treasury and Gordhan, he would not go far as supporting the sentiments of the DA.

Maluleke says it is a bit of stretch to argue that Eskom and Transnet are involved.

We will have to be a little careful with this... because if the funding mechanism is open and the criteria are objective and open, then technically you could argue there was nothing wrong with it if the finding was above board.

Political analyst, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke

We should separate the funding from the ideological - as much as it’s humanly possible, from the political leanings of Manyi and others.

While Manyi has himself dismissed the DA's claims that he and the forum are waging a war against National Treasury, the PPF is expected to respond in an official statement on Thursday.
