Gauteng Education Department is going to the Constitutional Court to ask for more time to change the current schools feeder zone.
The department wants to extend the current feeder zone which only allows parents to apply for their child to go to a school within 5 kilometers of where they live.
Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, says they want to change it to 30 kilometers. Last year the Constitutional Court ruled that current feeder zone is outdated and discriminatory.
We are ready to implement new boundaries but we are of the view that it would be appropriate that we have thorough consultation with communities, business and SGBs.— Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC
We believe if the Constitutional Court gives us almost until June, we will be in a position to consult freely, without pressure and give people sufficient time to engage us.— Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC
