Statistician-General Dr Pali Lehohla explains that one of the defining the principles of collecting data involves trust and accountability.
He says the purpose of collecting data is to facilitate discussion and allow South Africans to make rational arguments, as well as guide some of the policy decision-making processes.
Considering the size of the population, infrastructure and resources - how these correspond, Lehohla says the data is meant to direct the development of the country and should not be abused.
