Calls for US attorney general to resign over alleged Russian ties
Russia’s supposed meddling into Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is back in the spotlight after revelations that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met Russia's ambassador in July and September last year.
Democrats have accused him of lying under oath after he had told his confirmation hearing he had "no communications with the Russians".
Questions have been raised on what this means for FBI investigations into Russia’s alleged role in the 2016 presidential election.
As attorney general, Sessions oversees the Justice Department and the FBI, which have been leading the probe.
The Washington Post reports that in a statement issued on Wednesday night, Sessions said he “never met with any Russian officials to discuss issues of the campaign. I have no idea what this allegation is about. It is false.”
There have been mounting calls for the attorney general to resign.
