Understanding this sexually transmitted disease and why men should vaccinate

The 31st International Papillomavirus Conference is currently taking place in Cape Town.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 150 related viruses, some of which can lead to cancer. It is a common sexually transmitted infection and can also cause genital warts.

Not withholding how important it is for women to be vaccinated, and with a particular focus on cervical cancer, Prof. Margaret Stanley, Professor of Epithelial Biology at the University of Cambridge insists that men prioritise vaccinations to prevent infection.

It is important to vaccinate boys for three reasons, first of all equality – in health terms they need to be protected.

Genital warts partially in HIV infected people are a real problem because they grow to large amounts and they interrupt and affect really important functions like urination.

Certainly men who have sex with men are very much at risk at getting cancer in the back passage or anus - in medical terms.

What I think is really important about vaccinating men is if you vaccinate men you protect women because you stop the transmission of the virus.
