SA Post Office offers to assist Sassa with grant payments

The South African Post Office CEO Mark Barnes says they are willing to assist in the payments of social grants as pressures mounts on the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) to find an authorised distributor before the end of this month.

Sassa still doesn't have a plan in place to ensure some 17 million beneficiaries receive their grants.

Its contract with the current service provide, Cash Paymaster Services, will lapse at the end of March.

We can provide a workable solution through our electronic voucher system.

SAPO CEO, Mark Barnes

We have only got 2 500 odd points of representation but we can access to the 10 000 pay points through the exact same cash in transit partners that are doing it now.

SAPO CEO, Mark Barnes

We could end out these vouchers. You would be required to bring your ID’s rather than the biometrics for now and then we would then be able to pay you wherever you are now. I am talking about an interim solution that works now.

SAPO CEO, Mark Barnes

Last month Sassa CEO Thokozani Magwaza wrote to Barnes asking for assistance to help fast-track a deal.

Barnes has confirmed that they have finally responded.

We responded and we said these are the things that we can do. We firmly believe though a sustainable solution will require partnerships…

SAPO CEO, Mark Barnes

We are arguing to get us involved now. Let us be part of an interim solution now and when that is functional we can talk about the fully fledged biometrics countrywide, optimal solutions.

SAPO CEO, Mark Barnes

It’s a government service and not a private sector fiscus and the right solution does lie within government.
