Failure is a must - Dr Schomer

Failure is a given in life. Ever heard of a phrase we learn from our mistakes or once beaten twice shy? Although failing might be heavy on the soul, it is the most important step to reaching success.

Failure is mostly compared to a child learning how to walk. A child falls a couple of times before learning how to walk properly. That’s how failure works; you have to get up and try again and again after falling.

Failure is a must; we need to blunder to boost our bounce back capacity. Without learning how to get down on our knees and flat on the ground we wouldn’t know how to get up. We have to learn and learn.

Dr Helgo Schomer

Five steps to dealing with failure

  • Let it out.
Take a load off and express yourself; cry, mourn and share.
  • Do something.
Once you have mourned your failure you need to do something about it. Stand up and do it again – Re-instate, re-invent and rejuvenate.
Manage your response – how you respond to your failure is in your control
  • Do not give up.
Learn from your mistakes as well as others - What successful people do you look up to? Take a look at the failures they've encountered in their lives and work.
  • Have the basics in place.
You cannot drive a car without petrol; that’s a basic need.
Exercise a lot and keep healthy.
Eat healthy food and avoid junk.
  • Have optimistic faith.
Believing that we are part of a bigger plan and that there is a brighter future up ahead is critical to coming back from any failure.

Teaching children how to deal failure

  • As a parent lead by example
  • They need to know that they won’t be rejected
  • They need to know they will be received
  • They need to know they are allowed to show what they feel
  • They need to know there is someone to listen
