Conscious or commercial rap? A debate on music and morality

The difference between conscious and commercial rap is one of the oldest arguments in the hip hop industry.

While commercial rap has always reached financial success, conscious rap has always inspired the underground activist movement.

Author and activist rapper, Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, says the rappers should be hold accountable for the message they convey in their music.

Mpofu-Walsh argues that some artists are pushing 'a vacuous, materialistic message despite access to huge platforms', which he believes could rather be used to influence change.

You can't have strippers on your video objectifying women one minute, and then turn around lecture people on what they should be voting about the next minute.

If you want to rap about things that are morally objectionable, then don't turn around and pretend to be a leader in society.

Founder of SlikourOnLife and artist, Siya Metane, well known as Slikour, says it's wrong to give a rappers so much power.

Metane explains that perhaps the culture of rappers reflects black history and the background of those artists.
