Labour Dept investigates hospital roof collapse, possible negligence

Department of Labour inspectors are examining the cause of roof collapse at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in order to compile a preliminary report.

Yesterday five people were injured when concrete stones placed on a section of the roof by construction workers possibly caused the roof collapse

Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramakgopa has said she suspects that negligence may have led to the collapse.

South African Institution of Civil Engineering's Manglin Pillay says there a number of reasons that may have led to the incident, including negligence and incompetence.

Pillay says the inability to operate and maintain the building are the two major reasons for infrastructure collapsing.
