Telecommunications sets deadline for SA's high data prices

Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services deputy minister, Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize, says her department is working hard to ensure that high data prices drop.

In South Africa, mobile users spend almost 25% of their income on mobile services, well above the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) guideline of 5%.

Mkhize says this raises affordability concerns for the majority of South Africans who are unemployed.

We are at the phase of implementing the policy that has been approved.

Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize, Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services deputy minister

Definitely, it's not beyond three to six months (starting from March), so that we can assure people of South African that they can be able to do all the critical things they need to do without saying I don't have enough data to look for opportunity.
