Officials benefitted from Sassa/CPS contract - Scopa chair

Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) chairperson, Themba Godi, says it is disappointing that an 'honest civil servant', Social Development director general, Zane Dangor, has had to resign.

He cited the reason for his resignation being over disagreements with Minister Bathabile Dlamini over the payment of social grants.

Godi says 'there are many officials at South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) and Social development who want to do the right thing, but have been prevented by heavy handed intervention of the minister in administrative matters'.

He says Dlamini has deliberately failed the process and sidelined Sassa CEO Thokozani Magwaza who is currently on sick leave.

Dlamini has said Sassa has reached an agreement on a new contract with Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), but it has not been signed.

Black Sash advocacy manager, Elroy Paulus, says the public has a right to know the conditions of the agreement between Sassa and CPS.

Political analyst and Daily Maverick associate editor, Ranjeni Munusamy, added that the controversy around social grants payments may have negative impact on the ANC's succession process, in particular Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma's presidential contestation.

Dlamini announced that that ANC Women's League endorses Dlamini-Zuma to be the next president at the ANC's 105 birthday celebrations.
